A sprawling mansion gets updated with a full
digital system and retrofit of the latest toys
and multimedia control systems.
Set against the backdrop of Lake Bonaventure
stands a house with classical design and décor
outfitted with the latest digital toys and
multimedia delivery systems. A combination of
multiple zones, varied entertainment areas and a
massive media room, our showcase theatre is a
demonstration of technology integrated for ease
of use and everyday accessibility.
Defined as the ultimate digital theatre system,
a full HD front projector was sourced from Sony,
showcasing their award-winning “Pearl” SXRD
unit. Offering 1080p resolution, the latest
movies and television programs are projected
onto a custom 122” Draper screen with an output
that rivals the local Cineplex for size and the
best flat-panels for detail and color quality.
A top video delivery system wouldn’t be complete
without appropriate sources to take advantage of
its capabilities, therefore, a high definition
Shaw HD personal video recorder and a
state-of-the art Sony BDP-S1 Reference Blu-Ray
player delivers high definition upon request.
The theatre also deploys the Unity 1 Multimedia
server for management and playback of standard
DVDs. Configured with 2.5 terabytes of storage
space, the system automatically upscales all
content to 1080p while also automatically
cataloguing the home owner’s entire movie
collection. The system wirelessly links to the
two other Unity 3 extenders throughout the house
to make for whole-home distribution of movies
and music a snap. This particular Unity network
combines for a total capacity of over 9
terabytes or more than 1500 movies, all just a
touch of a button away. Certainly more than
enough to hold a lifetime's collection of
movies, music and pictures. When entertaining,
the home owners can use Unity to queue up their
favourite songs to be distributed throughout the
home as well as a karaoke system in the main
theatre for true interaction and immersion.
The heart of the audio system revolves around
Denon’s AVR-4806 7.1 channel THX certified
receiver. Enabling the integration of the
various components in one easy to use and
capable receiver was a priority and the Denon
was chosen because the homeowner’s familiarity
with previous products and the unit’s extensive
input & output options which were enough to
accommodate the current system as well as
providing headroom to grow into for the future.
The Denon powers seven speakers, the front
soundstage hidden in custom cabinetry along the
top of the main screen while surround speakers
float along the top of the 4 support pillars
within the room. Providing the boom and bang of
the experience are four 15” PSB subwoofers
located under the main screen. Butt-kicker Bass
Shakers are fitted to the seating positions to
enhance the involvement.
To keep things in check, a Monster Power HTS3600
provides surge protection while a Monster Power
AVS2000 offers voltage correction ensuring all
products receive all the juice they need to
perform. Energy Connoisseur interconnects are
used throughout to deliver the best signal to
the various components. Control for the entire
system is provided by a Philips Pronto TSU7500
touch screen panel. The remote sports a 4”
color touch screen and smartly controls all the
audio and video products while also offering
control over the lighting and climate systems
for the room to ensure an always comfortable
mixture for long hours of enjoyment. Programmed
to simplify the operation of the system, the
Philips remote eases the homeowner’s learning
curve to understand and take advantage of their
new media room.
The main living room benefits from a comfortable
layout with the equipment discreetly tucked
away. A 52” Sony XBR anchors the video system.
Supported by a Unity 3 Extender, movies and
music are easily accessed at the touch of a
button. For the kids, the latest video game
consoles in the form of Microsoft’s Xbox 360,
Sony’s Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. All
the systems run on wireless controllers to
enhance freedom of movement as well as reducing
clutter within the entertainment area. High
definition content is delivered via a Shaw HD
Personal Video Recorder and the blu ray player
incorporated into the Sony Playstation 3.
